The Journey That Started It All
Before I ever owned Organic Fix, I used to make this long trip, arms full of clanking jars and bottles, to the nearest place I could find that offered bulk refills.
It was quite a trek from where I lived at the time, but I didn't mind. I'd fill up huge containers of laundry liquid, dishwashing liquid, multi-purpose spray, shampoo, conditioner, and hand and body wash. And I'd stock up big, because it wasn't exactly around the corner. I had to make every refill count.
Looking back, I think that's where my love for bulk shopping really began.
It wasn't glamorous or convenient. It was a bit messy, sometimes heavy, and always noisy with all those glass jars clinking together in my car and shopping bags.
But it felt right. It felt like I was doing something meaningful, taking small steps to live more consciously, to reduce waste, and to do my part for the planet.
It Started with the Environment
At first, my motivation was purely environmental.
I didn't want to keep throwing away endless plastic bottles for things I could easily reuse. Every time I bought a new bottle of laundry detergent or shampoo, I knew that plastic container would outlive me, probably by centuries.
Bulk shopping was my way of saying, "I can make a difference," even if it was one refill at a time.
It felt empowering to take that small action, to know that my everyday choices were contributing to less landfill, less ocean pollution, and less demand for single-use packaging.
Then I Discovered the Money Part
But as I kept shopping this way, I realised there were even more benefits hiding in plain sight.
It wasn't just better for the planet - it was better for my wallet too.
Buying in bulk meant I was paying for the product itself, not all the packaging, marketing, and branding that typically comes with it. The savings were genuinely noticeable, especially on the things I used regularly.
It was such an empowering realisation, that being sustainable and being smart with money could actually go hand-in-hand. You didn't have to choose between doing the right thing and doing the affordable thing. You could do both.
Growing Bulk at Organic Fix
Fast forward a few years to when I purchased Organic Fix.
Back then, we had a fairly small bulk section, just a handful of pantry staples like grains, nuts, and seeds. But I knew straight away that bulk needed to become a bigger part of our story.
Over the past four years, we've grown that section significantly, and it's now one of the things I'm most proud of.
Today, our bulk section includes:
Pantry Staples
- Organic grains, flours, and pasta
- Nuts, seeds, and dried fruit (all sulphur-free)
- Spices and herbs
- Baking essentials
Oils & Liquids
- Olive oil and cooking oils
- Tamari and other condiments
Cleaning & Personal Care
- Laundry liquid
- Dishwashing liquid
- Multi-purpose cleaners
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Hand and body wash
Everything is available to refill in your own containers, reducing waste while maintaining the highest quality standards.
The Freshness Factor
If you've ever wondered about freshness when it comes to bulk foods, here's something important: our bulk section has such a high turnover that everything stays beautifully fresh and well maintained.
Because we're a community of regular bulk shoppers here in Eltham, stock doesn't sit around gathering dust. It moves quickly, which means you're always getting products at their peak freshness and quality.
This is especially true for things like nuts, seeds, and grains; they're constantly being replenished, so you're getting better freshness than you often find in pre-packaged products that might have been sitting on a warehouse shelf for months.
Why Bulk Shopping Matters Beyond the Obvious
Bulk shopping isn't just about saving money or reducing waste, though both of those things are genuinely important.
It's about connection.
When you shop in bulk, you see where your food comes from. You buy only what you need, reducing food waste in your own home. You make choices that genuinely support a healthier planet and a more sustainable future.
There's something grounding about scooping your own oats, measuring out your own rice, pouring your own olive oil. It slows you down. It makes you more mindful about what you're consuming and how much you actually need.
And perhaps most importantly, it's a visible act of care - for yourself, for your family, for your community, and for the earth we all share.
The Beautiful Win-Win
This is one of those beautiful situations where everyone benefits.
Your budget wins because you're paying for product, not packaging.
Your health wins because you're choosing fresh, organic, chemical-free options without fillers or preservatives.
The earth wins because you're dramatically reducing single-use plastic waste and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
It's rare to find something that ticks all those boxes at once, but bulk shopping genuinely does.
Your Gentle Nudge to Start
So if you've never shopped in bulk before, or if it's been a while since you brought in your jars, this is your gentle nudge to give it a go.
Start small. Maybe it's just oats for your morning porridge. Or olive oil for your cooking. Or your favourite cleaning product.
See how it feels. Notice the satisfying sound of grains pouring into your jar. Feel the weight of real food in your hands. Experience the quiet pride of knowing you're making a choice that matters.
You don't need fancy containers. Clean pasta sauce jars work perfectly. Old honey jars. Glass milk bottles. Anything with a lid that seals properly.
Bring them in, weigh them at the counter (we'll note the tare weight), fill them up, and weigh them again. It's that simple.
Building Something Together
Because every scoop, every refill, every clanking jar. It all adds up.
And together, we're building something that's not just better for today, but for the future we all share.
A future with less waste, more connection, and a genuine commitment to living in a way that honours both people and planet.
